Screenwriter Emeric Pressburger told director Michael Powell he wanted to tell a story about a woman who wanted one thing all her life. When she got very close to it she decides she doesn't want it anymore.

That's basically the entire story but it's the well drawn characters that provide the dramatic flow. Martin Scorsese once said that before he saw the film he didn't think there were anymore classics to be made.
